Out of the Box: A One-Stop Guide to Navigating Neurodivergence by Madonna King & Rebecca Sparrow

Finally, we have the first Australian book on parenting a neurodivergent child! The authors surveyed 1,300 families who have an immediate family member, mostly children, who identify as neurodivergent. They also interviewed 600 educators about neurodiversity in the classroom and sought out global experts, many of whom are also autistic or have ADHD.

There are tips for parents when it comes to seeking diagnosis for their child, and a discussion of the various labels often used that may not be helpful for those who are neurodiverse. They have checklists for families with children of all ages to help navigate school, home and family, as well as everything in between. There are great suggestions for navigating friendships at all ages (something that can be quite tricky when you are neurodiverse) and the challenges and rewards of life beyond high school. Finding work, dating and driving are also covered, making this a great resource not only for parents, but also for neurodiverse young people seeking some support navigating life’s major milestones. There is a chapter on navigating the NDIS and an extensive list of resources for families and educators – from autism and ADHD experts, parenting organisations and online learning resources, to books on neurodiversity for primary and high school-aged kids – that will be highly sought after.

This is an essential book for all people in Australia who support and work with neurodiverse young people, as well as those young people themselves. Bravo!
