If a butterfly is just a moth in a fancy cardigan, then perhaps we should always expect more than what we see.

This is the story of Gary Grey Moth who desperately wants to be seen and Florence Butterfly who has had enough of being noticed. What would happen if they swapped cardigans and could be the bug they each always wanted to be?

A humorous, insightful story of identity and coming-of-age, told from the unlikely but utterly relatable perspectives of a moth and a butterfly.

Book Review

Moth In A Fancy Cardigan
by Charlotte Lance

by Kim Gruschow, Mar 2022

Coming to us from stylish Melbourne publisher Berbay Books, this junior novel by Charlotte Lance is thoughtful and unusual.

We are told a story from two perspectives: Gary is a grey moth, who gives gloomy Eeyore vibes. Gary has the ‘Tuesday sads’ and bemoans his grey life and his grey cardigan.

Florence is a chaotic butterfly, and when a flurry of activity causes Florence to lose sight of the beautiful, colourful garment she wore to school, Gary can’t resist the urge to take it, to try it on, to enjoy a more colourful life.

This is a story about the different ways we experience things and move through the world. It will delight readers who enjoy encountering new and interesting words in their travels; great words like ‘schlep’, ‘galumph’ and ‘effervescent’ are dotted throughout. The illustrations by David Booth are gorgeous, and I love the neat zine-like design details with hand-drawn headings.

A book about finding the right fit and finding friendship for ages 8+.
