About Readings Kids
Readings Kids is a specialty children and young adult bookshop that branched off from our flagship Carlton location in 2016. Our shop’s driving force is finding the right story for every child, with the goal of sparking and nurturing a lifelong love of reading. We love finding perfect recommendations for kids and teens looking for their next read, and for adults shopping for little ones – or for themselves!
And, for those young customers still learning they can’t have everything, we always have emergency stickers on standby as a distraction or negotiation tool! We want everyone to feel supported and at ease while they explore our shop.
Located in a building that was originally dreamt up by Melbourne architect Daryl Jackson, this shop is a light-filled and welcoming space. The gorgeous open-plan design from Nest Architecture is both playful and practical, and one wall features a stunning mural from children’s book illustrator and author Marc Martin.
Readings Kids Story Time
These weekly free sessions run every Sunday, from 10.30am to 11.00am, and are suitable for children aged 0-8 years. We ask that parents please stay with their children for the duration of the reading.
Accessibility
We’re a welcoming space for readers of all ages, abilities and interests, and we strive to accommodate our visitors’ needs wherever possible. Whether it’s turning off the music or dimming the lights for those who may feel overstimulated, we’re here to make everyone feel comfortable.
During trading hours, the front door is always open and the shop is accessible for people whose mobility is impaired and wheelchair users. Clear signage can be found throughout the shop, and there is a wide main aisle for easy browsing of central shelves. Some shelving along the edge of the shop may be more difficult to access via wheelchair. There are no steps within the shop.
If you have any difficulties moving around the shop, encounter hard-to-reach titles, or require a pen and paper to communicate, staff members are always on hand to help.
There is seating available on a chair near the front door.
If you have any specific questions regarding accessibility, please contact the shop directly.
