Walter himself has had a long and tempestuous affair with the country, growing as it did out of his own affair with one of Vietnam’s sons. Walter met Thang Ngo in 1990 and they fell in love. He travelled to Vietnam with Thang for the first time four years later and on arrival shut himself in his room for two days and cried. He HATED it! But, love being all powerful, he eventually dragged himself out to do the right thing and meet Thang’s family and discover his country, and on that trip and over the course of 11 trips over the next 16 years, Walter has slowly, deeply and passionately fallen in love with Vietnam too. This is his story.
