Set in Thailand, The Breaking is a sharply observed and richly vivid story about the intense bond between two young women, and the enduring cost of animal exploitation. Gold – who has worked on projects with elephants rescued from the tourism and logging industries in Chiang Mai, Surin and Kanchanaburi – has drawn from these experiences in writing her novel. It is at once devastating and exhilarating, and ultimately transformative.
