Their struggle to survive the extraordinary conditions on this strange world is hindered by the difficulties in their relationship, especially their preconceptions of each other – he thinks she is a pampered, vain rich girl; she thinks he’s a boorish, poorly-educated army buffoon.
Their adventure unfolds through both perspectives (told in alternate chapters), drawing the reader deeper into their ordeal. But for all their grief, fears and misunderstandings the two develop respect for other’s talents and ultimately love blossoms.
