Schoenberg: Pellas and Melisande, Boulez
The cover of this recording has a close up of Pierre Boulez, but what it doesn’t adequately convey is that everyone performing on this disc is under 26 years old (aside from Boulez). Featuring the Gustav Mahler Young Orchestra, there is an overwhelming sense of musicianship and no hint that most of them only just finished up at conservatoriums around Europe. It’s a technically challenging and musically rewarding program that was recorded live in Tokyo 2003. Of particular note for my ears was the principal Oboist, who unfortunately as the liner notes list them alphabetically I cannot give them their due. Nonetheless, the Romanticism of Schoenberg coupled with the Wagner Overture proves for a fantastic platform for the musicians to all shine.
