Level 2 by Lenore Applehans

[[lenoreappelhans]]I started reading Level 2 expecting a light and enjoyable read. While it was certainly that, it was also a lot more.

The story intricately weaves parts of Felicia’s life and afterlife together to create a non-stop action-packed ride that doesn’t pull its punches. The glimpses we get of her life are that of a normal – albeit well-travelled – teenage girl. It’s not until later that you realise there’s a lot more going on than meets the eye.

The afterlife she finds herself in is a complex mix of Sci-Fi, Greek mythology and Biblical times. Although the concept the author builds could be hard to wrap your head around, Lenore Appelhans pulls it off flawlessly. Therefore the story is hard to put down, and that’s before you even add the characters.

I think Felicia is a wonderful narrator because even though at times she has different beliefs, she never forces them on the reader or refuses to see an important fact about the world she’s in. The mysteries that she alludes to are slowly brought to the surface and we are able to see a very multifaceted character.

From the blurb you’d expect there to be a love triangle, and to some extent there is – it just doesn’t play out like a traditional love triangle.

Julian is a shady character, and you never really understand him, because Felicia doesn’t. However, this allows the reader to form their own ideas about his motives. He is part of her life and death, and through both you get a sense of him. Neil is slightly more complex, because even though he’s a very important character, you only get to know him through Felicia’s past. He comes off as a very nice guy, but even he has things under the surface that draw you in.

Altogether, the story was well written and highly engrossing.
