This release, originally recorded in 1949-51, is an unusual look at the music of Sir Edward Elgar. Although the orchestra is the London Philharmonic, the cellist Anthony Pini firmly raised in the English musical tradition, the man at the helm conducting is of Dutch origin, Eduard van Beinum. What is immediately apparent is his enthusiasm for the music of Elgar and how he seems to invisibly shape the musicians into becoming the best they can be. Although the sound quality is not great, it does not diminish the joy found here.
