Contemporary Flute Concertos, Pahud

This is really exciting for me, a CD of contemporary flute concertos! More than that, it features three composers I’ve not heard of, who are all still alive and their music is totally accessible from the very first listen. The Dalbavie is, as the liner notes suggest, a conversation between the orchestra and soloist. The Jarrell ‘…un temps de silence…’ has more bite and rhythmic intensity to it, with the flute insisting that it is the soloist and what feels like the orchestra ignoring it. However the favourite for me is the Pintscher ‘Transir’. Use of extended techniques gives this an ethereal quality to the beginning that continues even as the rest of the orchestra join in.
