Grandpa's Short-Handled Hoe is an English / Spanish bilingual Early Reader Story book telling the story of the now banned short-handled hoe in the agricultural fields of California. The hoe was a 12" to 18" tool that had caused many back problems over generations of use. Field workers were often forced to stoop for hours a day while weeding the crops. In great part because of Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and others, the short-handled hoe was made illegal in 195 by the California Supreme Court. Many elder fieldworkers supported civil rights events while they were subjected to this harsh working practice. Today, should know of the value of the people who physically harvest the food we eat. The short-handled hoe, (el cortito, or el diablito) is a pivotal symbol of the Chicano movement. Children should not need to wait for high school or the university to learn about Chicano Studies. Award winning author presents Grandpa's Short Handled Hoe.
