In 1925 there appeared two classic representational fictions about urban life, one in America and the other in Western John Dos Passos' Manhattan Transfer and Frans Masereel's Die Stadt/The City (1925). As the first had only words, the latter offered only pictures-stark black woodcuts devoid of words. For this 21st-century edition, the book artist Richard Kostelanetz places pages of the latter between chapters of the former, creating from two old classics a new classic of visual/verbal literature.
