The Crow, the Cow and the Beaver
Frank Semmens
As a vegan, I chose to use the power of the pen to introduce to readers ages seven to 12 the concept of adopting a meatless diet. Instead of lecturing, I felt a children's story with professional illustrations would gently get the idea across in an enjoyable way. The story features a crow--among the most intelligent of birds--a cow whose baby boy has been snatched away from her on the day of his birth, and a helpful beaver. The crow and the beaver plot a way to free the baby bull from the barn, where he unknowingly awaits an imminent trip to the slaughterhouse. While readers discover how the baby will be returned to his mother, the story plants the seed in the readers' minds to consider a meat-free diet. I know that eating conscientiously can improve people's health, as well as that of the planet.
