Rectangular in shape, Pennsylvania is 180 miles wide and 310 miles long. It consists of 67 counties and has a land area of 46,000 square miles. The spooky, deep forests covering most of the state have prompted legends of monsters like Squonk and Bigfoot. Being settled by many German immigrants, it also has a rich folk tradition that includes the belief in hex doctors and witches. The Molly Maguires, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the restless ghosts spawned by them are part of its violent past that dates back to 1681.
