Johann Gehring, sixteen years old, travels alone to America and starts a new life in the prairies of Nebraska. Johann digs a well and builds a sod house amid nature's foes: tornados, prairie fires, and freezing winters. Johan finds love and is tested by the Stock Market Crash, the Dust Bowl, the Depression, Spanish Flu, personal tragedies.
In time, Johann changes his name to John, marries, and begins a family which will continue to live in the prairies of Nebraska.
Through natural diasters and cultural struggles, the Gehring family, led by the strong-willed daughter, Berta, will build a new life in the plains of America.
