I crafted this series of similes with the intention of resonating with and uplifting young Black Girls across the diaspora. Many of them have faced negative perceptions suggesting they lack beauty. The impetus for my writing came from a powerful moment involving a young Black Girl named Aryonna Cotton, who confided to her mother that she didn't see herself as beautiful. Drawing inspiration from the timeless elegance of historical figures like the Queen of Sheba to contemporary icons such as our esteemed former First Lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama. These descriptions celebrate a diverse range of beauty, including women and cultural symbols. My primary aim is to instill a deep sense of self-awareness and confidence within young Black Girls, affirming their inherent beauty and worth.
