Excerpt from Sermons and Addresses on Secret Societies: Fourteen Pamphlets in One Volume Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of dark ness, but rather reprove them; for it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret, ephesians, v. 11, 12.
The Works of Darkness comprise all that belongs to the system of moral evil. Opposition to God and holiness, characterizes their nature; the love and practice of them constitute the guilt, and lead to the destruction of man kind. Satan, the first great enemy of God, introduced them into this world, and it is by his special instigation and agency that they still prevail.
Every period of the world, has been marked with some peculiar enormity, designed to dishonor God, and to ruin the souls of men. Before the flood, the wickedness of man was great in the earth. Subsequently, idolatry led mankind almost universally, to the violation of the first commandment of that great law of inspiration, Thou shalt have no other Gods before me. Hence, the ancients worshiped their Apis and Crocodile, Baal and Moloch, Jupiter and Venus, and a host of inferior deities.
