A series of three modules, for use in the continuing education of nurses, focused on problems related to human sexuality that frequently require treatment. Addressed to the teachers of continuing education courses, the modules aim to promote sexual health by training nurses to recognize and manage problems, whether involving medication, referral for specialized help, or simple compassion and counseling. Throughout straightforward factual information is supported by numerous case histories and exercises. The first module, on sexually transmitted diseases, provides detailed information about the causes, clinical course, diagnosis, and treatment of each major sexually transmitted disease, including HIV infection and AIDS. Case studies are included to encourage practice in making a diagnosis based on a patient’s history and symptoms. The second module describes the most common problems of sexuality in males and females, explains some theories about their biological and psychological causes, and offers advice on counseling and referral. Advice is based on the assumption that many problems can be reduced when people are given the correct information about sex. The final module covers the sexual needs of the elderly and people suffering from chronic illness or disability.
