Der Platoniker Tauros in der Darstellung des Aulus Gellius
Marie-Luise Lakmann
Aulus Gellius’s account of his studies in Athens is a major source for the personality of Taurus, the Platonic philosopher of the 2nd century AD, and also provides insights into the history of the Platonic school of that time. This work collates Gellius’s reports on the Middle Platonist, and, by its detailed commentary, sheds light on the contents, form and methods of his philosophical instructions, on the relationship between teacher and students, and on student life in the 2nd century AD in general. In this way, many topics in ancient philosophy, philology, science and pedagogics are considered. Finally, the results thus gained are combined with all remaining literary and epigraphic evidence, so that a portrait of Taurus as a philosophical teacher emerges. A collection of testimonies and fragments concerning Taurus’s life and work, a bibliography and indexes complete this work.
