Han gor rede for sit folelsesliv, koste hvad det vil. Romanen vakte skandale med sin skildring af en moden kvinde, der forforer den unge hovedperson. Den blev beslaglagt af politiet og af Hojesteret stemplet som utilstedelig. Bang vendte 1884 og 1905 tilbage til sin roman og foretog aendringer med udeladelse af de forbudte passager. Den her foreliggende tekst er den oprindelige fra 1880.
