Benavente was praised by Lope de Vega in his work Laurel de Apolo, by Juan Perez de Montalban in his work Para todos, and by Tirso de Molina in his work Cigarrales de Toledo. he had a great satirical genius and talent for fine observation that made of him a predecessor of the Costumbrismo of the nineteenth century. At the same time he was the first to write interludes in verse with sung parts, a custom that later was popularized. In 1645, the first anthology of his works was published, under the title of Jocoseria, approved by Velez de Guevara and that gathers fourty-eight pieces. It is believed that he wrote around the 900 brief dramatic pieces, including praises and comic ballads, the majority have been lost or have no assigned author.
