In June of 1625 the garrison of Breda in Holland, led by Justino de Nassau, surrendered to Spinola after nine months of siege. Spinola conquered the city through a maze of trenches and fortifications. The victory was reflected in the painting by Velasquez titled Surrender of Breda, and considered as a major success for the rule of Spain and Felipe IV during the seventeenth century.
