One of the worst casualties of the first wave of violence was Odilo Alonso, a Spaniard who in the late 1950s emigrated to Cuba. Odilo was told to return to Spain when Castro confiscated the estate where he worked. He could’ve, but he said that if Cuba had welcomed him as a son, his duty was to fight for Cuba.
