I denne boken skildrer Fridtjof Nansen en lengre reise som han gjorde i Sibir i 1913 etter invitasjon fra russiske myndigheter. I kjolvannet av forste verdenskrig kom han til a engasjere seg sterkt for forholdene i Russland.
Jonas Lied, som organiserte reisen fra Norge til Sibir, hadde stiftet Det sibirske kompani for a drive handel og industri i Sibir og grunnla blant annet et sagbruk i Lesosibirsk ved Jenisej som sies a vaere verdens storste.
Nansen reiste gjennom Ishavet til munningen av Jenisej, opp denne elven til Krasnojarsk og med jernbanen frem og tilbake til Vladivostok. I dag er Fridtjof Nansen en av Krasnojarsk storste helter og fortsatt hoyst levende i folks minne.
