Amundsen hadde lenge syslet med planer om a fly til Nordpolen for han 18. mai 1925 kunne lette med to batfly fra Ny-Alesund og sette kursen nordover. Atte timer seinere landet de pa 87 grader 43 minutter nord. Ett fly var odelagt og ett fungerte men manglet rullebane. Etter 4 uker med slit klarte Roald Amundsen og hans fem menn a fa ett av flyene pa vingene igjen og vende tilbake til sivilisasjonen og livet.
