Kapplopet om Sydpolen utspant seg den antarktiske sommeren 1911-12, da en britisk og en norsk ekspedisjon konkurrerte om a bli de forste mennesker til a na den geografiske Sydpolen i Antarktis.
Den norske Fram-ekspedisjonen under ledelse av Roald Amundsen benyttet seg av atte menn og 118 hunder og var fremme ved polpunktet 14. desember 1911 etter 57 dagers marsj fra basen Framheim i Hvalbukta, via Axel Heiberg-breen opp til Polarplataet. Allerede den 25. januar 1912 kom alle de fem sydpolfarerne tilbake til Framheim etter 99 dagers ekspedisjon.
Ekspedisjonen var planlagt i minste detalj. Med unntak av den for tidlige starten ble den gjennomfort uten store problemer. Amundsen som forstemann pa Sydpolen har fatt stor symbolsk betydning i Norge. Samtidig star det dramatiske kapplop med Robert Scotts ekspedisjon som en av de store hendelsene i internasjonal polarhistorie.
