The diaspora, a powerful engine for the development of the homeland

Pauline Grace E Assougna Bindzi

This article discusses the positive effects of international migration. More specifically, it compares the benefits of African migration on the development momentum of Cameroon and Senegal, the countries of origin of the migrants under study. There is a close link between African mobility and the socio-economic growth of the homeland. The IOM analyzes this connection by presenting migrants as actors in the development of their countries of origin and destination. In this way, the diaspora, when well managed, is able to transfer significant financial and non-financial resources to its homeland. However, this contribution to nation-building is measured differently and varies from one diaspora to another. The sociological composition of diasporas (integration, level of schooling and vocational training, employment and unemployment rates, mode of organization abroad, monthly or annual income/migrant, etc.), strongly determines the level of participation of each community.
