Baptism of Africans in the first parish of Feira, 1785-1826

Yves Samara

Research into the history of slavery in Feira de Santana is ongoing. In order to help overcome the geographical and conceptual limits of studies on the subject, this study aims to identify and publicise the results of research into ecclesiastical sources on the baptism of Africans in the first parish of Feira de Santana, Sao Jose das.itapororocas, in the period 1785-1826. Baptism was considered a rule in Brazilian society in the construction of extended and enlarged families, in other words, the bonds made it possible to increase this already existing family. The meanings of baptism for the written were varied, depending on the relationships established in the prevailing society. Therefore, the baptism of Africans made it possible to get to know the most expressive ethnic group in Feirense and the strategies of survival and resistance of the enslaved in the construction of these spiritual and kinship ties.
