Evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of Pinus pinaster
Ellen Bernardi, Sandra Ines Adams Agnes, Cledes T de Oliveira
The aim of this work was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the volatile oil obtained through hydrodistillation and the extracts obtained through maceration, infusion and decoction extracted from Pinus Pinaster on the bacterium Streptococcus sp. The antimicrobial activity against the bacterium streptococcus sp was investigated by the agar diffusion method using disks. The oil yield was low, but sufficient to investigate the antimicrobial activity shown against streptococcus sp, and the essential oil extract obtained by hydrostilation proved to be more efficient in inhibiting the growth of the microorganism. The macerate in 99.5% P.A. alcohol also showed inhibition against the bacteria. The results obtained point to the need for further studies, as Pinus Pinaster needles show considerable antimicrobial potential.
