Smoking by professionals in the university environment is a cause for concern, given its impact on student smoking behavior. Understanding the determinants of smoking among university professionals is a prerequisite for measures to combat this phenomenon.Active smoking was reported by 50% of male participants. Severe to very severe symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress were found in 6.4%, 22.5% and 9.7% of our participants respectively. Workload was perceived as severe to very severe in 33.9% of our participants. Nicotine dependence, as assessed by the Fagerstroem test, was high to very high in half the smokers.
