Social representations of violence against teachers at school

Michelle Beltrao Soares

On an almost daily basis, different media publicise acts of violence committed within schools. This violence is not only physical, but also psychological and moral, through disrespect and violation of human rights, and is characterised as a complex phenomenon. Physical and verbal aggression between pupils, between teachers, gang invasion and drug trafficking have all been present in schools, causing insecurity, fear, bewilderment and anguish in the school community. In this way, various dimensions of everyday teaching work are involved with scenes of violence, causing implications for the school and the work carried out in it. This book discusses this phenomenon from the perspective of the Theory of Social Representations, in a study that sought to give teachers a voice.
