Effect of Growing Media on Low Chilling variety of apple “HRMN-99”
Abhilash Padhan
Low-chill apple varieties have demonstrated their adaptability to warm climates in tropical and subtropical regions of India, particularly within the latitudinal range of 15 degrees to 30 degrees north of the equator. This encompasses the North Indian plains, the Gangetic basins, significant portions of eastern states, and the Eastern and Western Ghats, including the Nilgiri region. Notably, a new low-chill apple cultivar "HRMN-99," developed by Hariman Sharma from Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh and officially registered under the PPVFRA Act (Protection of Plant Variety and Farmers Rights Act) in his name during 2021, has gained prominence. While conventional apples normally develop improper colour and fungal spots on their surfaces in the event of excessive rain or fog during the fruit maturity period, this new variety is resistant to scab disease. Due to its higher sugar-acid ratio, attractive colour, and higher self-life, this variety overcomes several demerits of the low-chilling apple varieties. This variety is resistant to scab disease.
