Celestine III died and Lotario Segni (Innocent III) was elected, he was only thirty-seven years old, he had studied Theology in Paris and Canon Law in Bologna with Uguccio, they saw in him that he understood perfectly the crisis that the Church was living and that he was conscious of being able to solve it. He set himself three objectives: to organize a crusade, to secure direct control of the entire Church, and to reform Christianity (clergy and laity).
