This short story, ‘Walking with Eve’ was inspired by the song ‘The Long Black Veil’. The story is a work of fiction. The song itself did not provide any information other than some basic facts, including the facts that there was a murder, and the man convicted and executed because he did not provide his alibi left his lover behind to mourn. She, who we call Eve in the story, visits his grave full of guilt as she feels that she is guilty of his death, his execution. We create a story of what might have happened subsequently. The story is not based on fact, as there are no details provided in the song. At the time of the murder Eve and her lover were together, but kept it a secret. Subsequently and full of guilt feelings Eve continues to visit the grave of her lover and over a considerable period of time, she in visiting the grave meets others who are bereaved for one reason or another. She gets to know a small group in similar situations to herself. Their favourite meeting time, eventually turns out to be at the full moon each month. By chance it happens that one of the people visiting a grave close to Eve’s partner’s grave is a woman, Bride who is a member of a witchcraft coven…
