Military encyclopedic lexicon was published for the first time from 1837 to 1850 and has 14 primary volumes and one additional (released in 1852). This great work owes its appearance almost exclusively energy and perseverance of its editor Baron LI Zeddelera on which lay the whole bulk of the work. In essence, the Lexicon is the first Russian military encyclopedia (before it left only the two-volume Military Dictionary Tuchkova SA, in 1818). Despite the rather cold reception military circles of the first issues of Lexicon , coming out of a small book (it is known that the first part consisted of four separate books) over long periods of time and costing sale rather a lot of money, Zeddeler aggressively engaged in its publication, investing, besides personal labor and much of his fortune, and for 13 years led him to the end. The Lexicon was planned very well, keeping in mind the very low level of education of army officers era of Emperor Nicholas I and the difficulty of replenishing education at deaf parking and constant movement of regiments from place to place. Because of this, in the Lexicon included a number of details, very distantly related to military affairs. Baron Zeddeleru managed to attract to the compilation Lexicon the most outstanding military and scientists Nicholas time, among which highlights the KF Bugg. ovut, MI Bogdanovich, KM Basili, AV Viskovatov, NS Golitsyn, N. Grech, DA Milutin, AI Mikhailovsky-Danilevsky, PI Rikord other. From the department of Lexicon the most complete and the most carefully drawn up a military-historical department; It looks the weakest department of military equipment, which is consistent with its then-state. Lexicon was built alphabetically articles; some volumes made a special Addition , which includes some of the articles, missing for various reasons, in previous volumes. In connection with the publication of a long Lexicon and fairly rapid obsolescence of existing information in it, in 1852 he was released additional volume entitled The addition of the Military Encyclopedic Dictionary . In 1852-1858 gg. It was carried out the second revised edition under the direction of M. Bogdanovich, which we publish. On the proposal of Lieutenant General Baron NV Medem, second Izanami Lexicon by the Academy of Sciences was awarded the Demidov Prize. In the 1880s. The War Department considered timely rework Lexicon as much obsolete in the most important, tactical and technical parts. This work was entrusted to the great team of employees, headed by GA Leer. The first volume of the new edition, who bore the name of the Encyclopedia of military and marine sciences was released in 1883, the last - in 1895
