L'un emigre en Amerique, l'autre devient cheminot. Cependant, la terre finalement ne meurt pas, puisque le valet Jean Nesmy, accepte comme gendre par le metayer apres quelques reticences, reprend finalement l'exploitation.

Ce livre a connu un tres grand succes et en 1936 a ete un des tout premiers a etre filme en couleurs.
