Ces memoires, inachevees, ne seront publiees qu'en 1821, soit six ans apres la mort de Germaine de Stael. Elles comprennent deux parties. La premiere, ebauchee en 1811, couvre la periode 1800-1804. L'auteure y denonce le despotisme naissant de Bonaparte et les persecutions dont elle fut la victime. La deuxieme, redigee a Stockholm vers la fin de 1812, relate l'extraordinaire evasion de l'auteure de Coppet le 23 mai 1812.
