Im 17. Jahrhundert gab es in Willstatt eine kleine judische Landgemeinde. Der 30-jahrige Krieg liess sie Schutz suchen in der benachbarten Reichsstadt Offenburg. 1680 jedoch verlangten die Zunfte ihre Ausweisung. Sie kehrten nicht mehr nach Willstatt zuruck. Einige nahmen das Angebot an, in der neugegrundeten Residenz Karlsruhe zu wohnen, darunter auch die Vorfahren des Chemie-Nobelpreistragers von 1915, Dr. Richard Willstatter. In einer Autobiographie schilderte Willstatter sein Leben, seinen Kampf gegen Antisemitismus, seine Flucht 1939 in die Schweiz.
