This volume of the Catalogus Fossilium Austriae series is a further milestone for the geological research in the Miocene of Austria. It focuses on the echinoids - a long neglected but highly interesting group of Neogene fossils. The impact of the present monograph reaches far beyond the borders of Austria. For the first time in ninety years, a large-scale work encompassing the echinoid fauna of the whole Central Paratethys is now available. All nominal taxa mentioned in the earlier literature that deals with this area are discussed and have been revised whenever possible. With few exceptions, each valid taxon is described and illustrated in detail. Additionally, the temporal and spatial range of each individual species is re-considered, allowing biostratigraphic and biogeographic questions to be asked in relation to echinoids for the first time. This monograph thus offers a vast amount of new data and will form an indispensable basis for further research on neogene echinoids of Central and Eastern Europe.
