Hanyali Nuri, H. 1172/ M. 1758-1759 ile H. 1230/ M. 1815 tarihleri arasinda Girit'in Hanya ve Kandiye sehirlerinde yasamistir. Sair elli sekiz yillik oemrune ondan fazla eser sigdirmistir. Girit'te bir edebi muhitin tesekkul etmesine oenemli katkilari olmustur. Sekil ve muhteva bakimindan incelenerek tenkitli metni olusturulan Hanyali Nuri Divani'nda degisik nazim sekillerinde toplam 1152 siir bulunmaktadir. Icerik bakimindan doenemin yenilik arayislarini yansitan eser, Girit'in sosyal ve kulturel hayatina dair verdigi bilgilerle dikkat cekmektedir. Girit'teki; hem milliyet bakimindan hem de dini cesitlilik, pek cok insanin oelumune yol acan salgin hastaliklar, halkin giyim tarzi, devlet adamlarinin tayinleri vs. konular siirlerde islenmistir. Divanin dikkat ceken bir baska oezelligi de degisik sebeplerle doksan civarinda sairden soez etmesidir. Bunlar arasinda diger biyografi kaynaklarinda isimlerine rastlanmayan kisiler de bulunmaktadir.
