A l'origine simple pelerin berbere, musulman coutumier, Ibn Battuta profite de la place occupee par l'Islam et la langue arabe qui faciliterent grandement ses deplacements. Il profite egalement du developpement du commerce puisqu'il se joint souvent a des caravanes, ou embarque sur des vaisseaux marchands musulmans. Il rencontre de nombreuses personnalites et devient souvent leur conseiller lors de ses periples a rallonge. On peut distinguer quatre periodes dans ces voyages:

(1) 1325-1327: premier pelerinage a La Mecque (le hajj) par le Maghreb, exploration de la vallee du Nil, de la Syrie, de l'Irak et des villes d'Iran;
(2) 1328-1330: deuxieme pelerinage a La Mecque en passant par les cotes du sud de la peninsule arabique jusqu'a Kilwa kisiwani et sur les cotes africaines de culture swahilie;
(3) 1330-1346: troisieme pelerinage a La Mecque, exploration de la Turquie, la mer Noire, l'Asie centrale, l'Inde, Ceylan, Sumatra, la Malaisie et la Chine jusqu'a Pekin;
(4) 1349-1354: traversee du Sahara jusqu'au Mali.
