This work is an intellectual biography of Barbault-Royer (1767-1831), a contemporary of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. Barbault-Royer, whose Indo-descendant origins went back to the island of Mauritius, was the first French man of letters to be a free man of color. From 1791, his writing advocated for ardent republicanism, secularism, and the abolition of slavery.
