Avancant de maniere argumentee, Renan conteste le role central attribue implicitement a la religion musulmane dans le developpement scientifique du monde arabe au Moyen-Age: Cette civilisation musulmane a ete autrefois tres brillante. Elle a eu des savants, des philosophes. Elle a ete, pendant des siecles, la maitresse de l'Occident chretien. Pourquoi ce qui a ete ne serait-il pas encore ? Voila le point precis sur lequel je voudrais faire porter le debat. Y a-t-il eu reellement une science musulmane, ou du moins une science admise par l'islam, toleree par l'islam ?
