Authors note Book 18 finds the children exploring the land beyond Pinky Stream where they encounter wildlife normally found in Cuba. This place is home to some of the smallest creatures of their species in the world. The children meet some friendly animals that try to give clues suggesting that something is wrong. But even the animals seem confused about the confusing clues they are giving. Eventually the children meet a few interesting pond creatures who perhaps give the most wise and straightforward clues - in a roundabout way. The clues seem to suggest there is a monster lurking about in a nearby forest. This monster seems to have powers that are as frightening as its ghastly ghoulish appearance.
