The book is aimed at children (and adults) of all ages and contains fourteen stories about the hilarious and often dangerous exploits of two dogs, Sam and Sophie, who live in the Yorkshire countryside.
Sophie is the smaller of the two dogs, is very placid, and is, of course, liked by everyone she comes into contact with. Sam, on the other hand, is much larger both in physical structure and life. He is often considered a pest, but his heart is in the right place. He is also very brave and offers assistance to others.
The stories take the reader through various adventures that the two friends undertake and incorporate many other animals ranging from birds, fish, soldier ants, and even a hermit crab.
Each animal/bird has a name that usually corresponds with the first initial of the name of the kind, for example, Frank the fox, Paul the pigeon, and so on. The only exception to this is Kevin the Crow, who features in many of the stories.
Ann Heward was born in 1953 and is the mother of two boys. She currently lives in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
She is married to John, her husband of fifty years, having married on her birthday at the tender age of eighteen. As John was a soldier, Ann left her hometown, family, and friends and went to live in Germany. She then accompanied her husband throughout his twenty-six years of service, which afforded her the opportunity to travel the world.
A dog lover of many years (she currently has two labradors), Ann is well equipped to write these stories. The characters are centered on two of her dogs, who were actually called Sam and Sophie.
