Put simply, Kilmer was able to inhabit Morrison. Think back to what he writes early in his memoir about the many characters he portrayed in his movies: I was and was not the character I played. The character went through me, and therefore was me, even as I went through the character and became him. Pieces of me and pieces of him merged.
