Joy of the Frontier: An Exciting New Account of Adventures in the San Juan Mounts and New Mexico in the 1880s
William Flewellyn Saunders
It rarely happens, but occasionally a manuscript appears that literally changes our view of history, adds insights into important events, or perhaps even changes history. Such a book is Joy of the Frontier and the history it affects includes early Christian bible camps, the Civil War’s effect on women and children, life in early Ouray, details on the Uncompahgre Indian Agency, the relief effort to safely return the captured women of the Meeker Massacre, the personality of Billy the Kid, information on Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday in their later years, and the craziness of early Santa Fe and Albuquerque. He also was close to Chief Ouray and Chipeta and relates their feelings of what was happening to the Utes before and after the Meeker Massacre.
