Born in the youthful years of the American republic, Emily saw and experienced the grief and anguish of the Civil War and lived almost to the dawn of the 20th century. Emily’s story, based largely on her diary, provides a window into the Christian life of this pastor’s wife, mother of five children, teacher, and author. Though her world differs greatly from ours, many of her spiritual concerns are similar and can offer an example and encouragement in our own Christian walk.
