Sun Rising Through Vapour
Paul Spencer-Longhurst
This catalogue, published to accompany the Barber Institute’s 2003/04 exhibition, The Sun Rising through Vapour, presents some of Turner’s most luminous seascapes, painted during the early part of his career from 1795 to 1810. His first exhibited oil painting, Fisherman at Sea of 1796, was described at the time as masterly, and his early reputation was founded on a series of dramatic seapieces that he regularly showed at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and in his own gallery until about 1810. The artist even claimed to have lashed himself, Ulysses-like to the mast of a ship during a storm in order to be able to grasp the full force of the experience.
