'Where Alice Belongs' is set in London in 1941. The Second World War is raging with terrifying nightly bombing raids. Normal life is put on hold as the enemy pushes closer. Helena, a rebellious young woman, meets Robert after she survives a raid on the centre of the city. Their backgrounds are different. Helena has had a charmed life in a wealthy family with private education and a luxurious home. Robert supports his elderly parents, who live in rented accommodation.
There is instant attraction and, despite parental disapproval, the couple decides to marry. Robert is soon sent to the battlefront in North Africa; Helena must cope on her own. When she realises she is pregnant, her feelings are a mixture of fear and joy.
Although she can write to Robert, there is no guarantee she will ever see him again.
She now has to protect her unborn baby, who, they have agreed, will be called Alice if it is a girl. Will this child have a future? Will any of them
have a future?
